Bane of Sanity is the Magico held captive within the Temporary Prison. Unlike most enemies, she must be fought multiple times in multiple forms before you can truly defeat her.

First Form

Isabelle: "Okay, today you are fighting a female looking magico that... To be honest, I don't know anything about it. Give me a sec to check the records. What, only paper documents? Tsk, why did we waste all that money on a computer network if only half the girls can use it? This may take longer than I thought. I will come back to you when I have some info."

Unknown Magico: "Do we really have to fight? I could give you a wonderful time."

Spells and Abilities

In your first encounter with Bane of Sanity in the Temporary Prison she will be referred to as the Unknown Magico. While she has a low HP value and similarly low stats, she is also outright immune to death (not merely MC Instant Death.pngInstant Death, but actually any form of dying). You can attack her or ignore her, but either way have to waste five turns and go through the dialogue to progress the fight, before she casts Mindtwisting Spores to end the fight and launch the party into the Hallucination.

Second Form

Spells and Abilities:

Bane of Sanity's second incarnation resembles her first in appearance, but she is no longer quite so harmless as she once was. Although by no means a heavy hitter, most of her moves deal damage to multiple targets at once. Far worse is the fact that her Psychic Assault and Madness spells can inflict MC Confused.pngConfused on multiple party members per cast, potentially disabling your team very early on. Speaking with Wendy before starting this fight grants Eric(a) MC Wendy's Help.pngWendy's Help, a status effect which renders them immune to and mind-affecting statuses, but this protection does nothing for your allies.

While it's possible to cure confusion with Seals of Focus, it's better to avoid the status effect entirely by throwing up a Lovely Barricade the moment combat begins. If for some reason you don't have the spell, you might still wish to ignore the confusion, as confused characters tend to "cure" themselves rather quickly anyway, and you need to be damaging this boss in order to bring her down quickly. Don't bother attempting to land any status effects on her, as she's immune to everything that matters. Keep up the damage output and when her HP hits zero you'll force her to change shape yet again.

Third Form

Bane of Sanity: "Enough! I grow tired of this, I guess I have to get serious!"

Veronica: "Ugh, she no longer has good legs."

Alice: "Still stinks of purple though."

Eric(a): "Don't lose focus!"

Natalie: "Don't worry Erica, we will still... do what you want us to do!"

Spells and Abilities

The third form Bane of Sanity takes is a horrible tentacled beast, a stark change from the previous beautiful naked woman. This form is physically tougher than before, and adds three new skills to its arsenal: Dominion Over Madness, Noxious Tentacles, and Shatter Magic. Noxious Tentacles is the most straightforward of the three, dealing damage and potentially inflicting MC Poisoned.pngPoisoned, a fairly normaly attacking skill. The other two are much more interesting.

Shatter Magic is a particularly troublesome skill that may be cast if either MC Ailment Guard.pngAilment Guard or MC Ailment Defence.pngAilment Defence are up, stripping all positive status effects from the party. This is not guaranteed to be cast, and will also waste a turn of the boss to use so keeping up Lovely Barricade anyway will be worth it if Eric(a) has the MP for it, though any other buffs are probably not worth the turns used. This is also because leaving yourself open to status effects allows for Dominion Over Madness to show its effects, which will turn all MC Confused.pngConfused statuses on the party into MC Charmed Breakable.pngCharmed (Breakable).

Final Form

Bestiary Entry: Although physically pathetic, this psychic Magico can become grotesquely strong in the minds of those who fall victim to its spores.

Veronica: "Ouch, my head! What the hell just happened!?"

Alice: "I have no idea, but I'm glad I'm no longer tasting and smelling colours."

Natalie: "This must have been what Julie calls a 'bad trip'."

Eric(a): "It seems we are back to normal, but what is that thing?"

Natalie: "I think it's the magico. That must be its real form."

Eric(a): "We have to keep fighting it?"

Alice: "I wouldn't call it a fight. The magico seems to have exhausted its powers. By now it's only a ball of fungus and slime with two small arms. This is going to be more like an execution!"

Veronica: "Good! After what it made us go through, it deserves nothing short of a death sentence!"

Spells and Abilities

Drops

The final form of Bane of Sanity is a useless fleshy orb atop a trunk with two stubby arms. In this state the boss is incapable of dealing any real amount of damage and is almost as worthless in terms of defence as well. As Alice says, this is more of an execution than a fight at this point.

After the fight Marianne, Olivia, and Isabelle will show up. A scene will play out in which the two adults reprimand the rest of you. The next time you speak with Marianne in camp, Eric(a) will receive a trip to the Punishment Classroom.

Losing the Battle

Depending on which form of Bane of Sanity to lose to, you'll receive different results.

  • First Form: Given that this form does not actually attack you, it requires the use of the Poison Bottle to actually lose to it. Wendy will help you out here and restart the battle.
  • Second and Third Forms: Losing to either of these forms (or to any encounter in the Hallucination) causes the Cutie Knights to spiral into madness, resulting in the Mind Broken Game Over.
  • Final Form: Losing to the final version of Bane of Sanity results in you being rescued by Isabelle, Marianne, and Olivia. You permanently miss out on the reward for defeating Bane of Sanity: the Insanity Core and a pile of lumes. You do still receive the Punishment Classroom session for being here though.
