Eric(a): "Are they friendly?"
Isabelle: "Sometimes, but the ones that live in this cave complex certainly aren't. Well it doesn't seem too tough, so it shouldn't give you too much trouble. But look out for that spear, it seems to be coated in poison."

Kobolds are not fragile, harmless Dungeons & Dragons-style cannon fodder contrary to Natalie's beliefs. Their moveset is full of abilities capable of debilitating your party with a variety of status effects, including inflicting Poisoned and Silenced effects as well as a variety of STAT Downs. This makes them effective distractions while their more directly powerful allies dish out damage. Consider maintaining Lovely Barricade for the 
Ailment Guard to defend against the status effects while you take them out quickly.
