What game version are you on?
I just spent like twenty minutes staring at Sophie's events in the game files trying to figure out if I was incorrect, but as far as I could see, in 0.4.7b she indeed works the way I described. When I thought to check the older versions, 0.4.6e or even just 0.4.7, you would be correct.
So. Have you updated to 0.4.7b?
